A World Of Friends

A World Of Friends
Here’s a word whose meaning has changed over the last several years – “friends”.  When in the course of human history did people ever keep count of their friends?  Well, we seem to be doing so today.

First MySpace, then Facebook.  At first I laughed at the joke of all this – everybody on this mad dash to collect friends like dollars.  “How many friends do you have?  Oh, are you really that popular?”  Sort of high school revisited…

But then Facebook sort of came along and developed the concept to a higher level.  Rather than just friend counting, it actually gave us the ability to renew old friendships, to catch up, to find related ones.

Part of it is still a bit silly to me.  I’ll have to admit to having friends on Facebook that I don’t even know, but I figure that if they want to be my friend, if they don’t look or act deranged, who am I to say no?

Also, let’s be clear here.  I have a lot more friends than are listed on Facebook.  They’re just not ‘official’ friends.  Or is it the other way around?

But the Friend Trend is probably a good thing.  If you think about it, the world is becoming friends with each other.  That can’t be so bad for the world.

For a good reason I befriended someone I met in Brazil.  Now I have many Brazilian friends and the list grows every day.  Trouble is, I don’t speak Portuguese and can’t understand a word they’re saying, but who am I to say no to South Americans?

And now I’m even friends with organizations!  I’ve never had an organization as a friend before.  I’m not sure I really know how to act around them.  Do I send them flowers?  If there are a hundred people in the organization, shouldn’t that really blow up my count and make me even more popular?

I got a letter from a guy the other day who asked to drop me as a friend because he had reached his quota of 5000 friends and he couldn’t add any more and since he didn’t really know me could we possibly just NOT be friends?  But I really like this guy’s trumpet playing!  I hope I wasn’t the only one he dropped.  What a responsibility he now has in life.  He now has to actually manage his list of 5000 and go through it every week to pare down the list so he can add more.  Weird.

Seems like he’s about to lose a lot of practice time on his trumpet to friend management.  What we need is a bigger Facebook server!  I mean shouldn’t Celine Dion be able to have more than 5000 friends?  I don’t want to be her fan; I want to be her friend!

Ah well, I guess that in this life the good comes with the bad.  The real question is:  When will somebody come up with a new social network where we can all collect massive lists of ENEMIES!  Now there’s an idea yet to be developed for somebody out there.  You could call it Armpitbook.

I could run with that one for about a month.  Here’s a new social network that could actually start WAR!

Moving on…

Back to friends.  Overall, I guess it’s a good thing.  I’m developing a new CD concept for Watchfire Music about friends.  The subject seems to be on everybody’s radar these days so why not try to sell a few tunes on the subject.

Here’s one for your listening pleasure.  This one written for the musical King Of Hearts that ran on Broadway back in the 70s.  Give it a listen if you like.  Better yet, buy it!

If ya’ like it, let me know.  We can become friends on Facebook.  I ain’t even close to 5000.

Sung by Peter Link and Friends

In an hour or two I will shoulder my load
And head out on that lonely road again
But just for the moment it’s cozy and warm
There ain’t nobody here except my friends

With my friends
There’s nothing left to prove
There’s nothing that’s forbidden or taboo
With my friends
There’s no way I have to be
I like them and they seem quite fond of me

Nothin’ to hide
The heart swings wide
You’re lookin’ deep in someone’s eyes
You fall inside

One of ya’ smiles
Maybe him  maybe you
One of ya’ speaks
Ya’ don’t care who
There’s no damn difference between you two
An’ it feels that close with all of you

With my friends
With my friends

With my friends
My friends since time began
The Lord don’t give much more than this to man
With my friends
There’s nothin’ to explain
Though kings and kingdoms crumble
Friends remain

No I never asked to be born in a world
Where men are out to murder other men
Now I found me a place so peaceful and safe
Where everybody’s everybody’s friend

Nothin’ to hide
The heart swings wide
You’re lookin’ deep in someone’s eyes
You fall inside

One of ya’ smiles
Maybe him  maybe you
One of ya’ speaks
Ya’ don’t care who
There’s no damn difference between you two
An’ it feels that close with all of you

With my friends
With my friends
